Located in the midst of Izmir, Selçuk is home to the antique city of Ephesus, the largest archeological site in Turkey. Selçuk proudly houses one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world: the Temple of Artemis.
One of the most amazing ruins in Ephesus is the huge amphitheatre with a seating capacity for 24,000 spectators and superb acoustic effects. The ruins also include a gymnasium, agora and baths, as well as the Library of Celsus. The theatre still stages various domestic and international performances and concerts. Another very important place in Christian history is the "House of Virgin Mary", the holy mother of Christianity, located at Bülbül hill.

Located in the central Culture Park of Izmir, this modern museum was opened in 2004. It exhibits artifacts such as jewellery, coins, ceramics, glassware and statues all collected during excavations in and near Izmir.
The museum houses a very rich collection covering a time range between Prehistoric and Byzantine. What you should not miss is the statues of Demeter, Poseidon and Artemis, found in the Izmir agora excavations.

The modern Archeological Museum of Izmir, located in the Konak district, was opened in 1984 after being open to the public in different areas of the city since 1927. The museum covers an area of 5,000 sqm with over 1,500 artifacts on display. The exhibition is organised on different floors and halls containing, among others, findings from the ancient city of Smyrna.
