The High Dam

The world-famous High Dam is an engineering feat of the 1960s. It contains 18 times the quantity of material used for the Great Pyramid of Cheops. The Aswan High Dam is 3,830 m in length, 980 m wide at the base, 40 m wide at the crest and 111 m tall. Together with the old Aswan Dam built by the British between 1898 and 1902, 6 km down river, it provides irrigation and electricity for the whole of Egypt. It also offers breathtaking views of Lake Nasser, the huge reservoir created when the dam was built, the Kalabsha temple to the south and the huge power station to the north.

The Tombs of Nobles

The northern hills of the west bank (Qubbet el-Hawwa, meaning “windy dome”) are filled with the rock-hewn tombs of princes from the Old Kingdom to the Roman period. The 6th Dynasty tombs, some of which form linked family complexes, contain important biographical texts. Inside, the tombs are decorated with vivid wall paintings showing scenes of everyday life, hieroglyphic biographies and inscriptions telling of the noblemen's journeys into Africa.

The Philea Temple

A must-see for visitors to Egypt, the Philae Temple, dedicated to goddess Isis. When the high dam was built, the buildings were all dismantled from the original site, now submerged by Lake Nasser, and rebuilt on another island, higher than the waters of the lake.

The Abu Simbel Temple

Abu Simbel lies south of Aswan on the western bank of the Nile, 290 km south of the First Cataract in what was once Nubia. The site was known as Meha in ancient times and was first documented in the 18th Dynasty, when Ay and Horemheb had rock-cut chapels hewn in the hills to the south.
