Destination Guide - Aswan
This is the mausoleum of the spiritual leader of the Ismailis, a Shi'ite sect based principally in India but with followers around the world. It is an elegant pink granite structure dating from the late 1950s, and resembles the Fatimid tombs in Cairo.

The world-famous High Dam is an engineering feat of the 1960s. It contains 18 times the quantity of material used for the Great Pyramid of Cheops. The Aswan High Dam is 3,830 m in length, 980 m wide at the base, 40 m wide at the crest and 111 m tall. Together with the old Aswan Dam built by the British between 1898 and 1902, 6 km down river, it provides irrigation and electricity for the whole of Egypt. It also offers breathtaking views of Lake Nasser, the huge reservoir created when the dam was built, the Kalabsha temple to the south and the huge power station to the north.
